Alpaca Wool Ponchos

Long before the Spanish conquest, the indigenous South American people used wool from alpacas and llamas to make warm, refined clothing to protect themselves from the cold. They covered the upper part of their bodies with a wool poncho: a square or rectangular piece of clothing with a slit for the head that falls along both sides of the body, sometimes down to the ankles. The vibrant colors came from vegetable or mineral dyes. The wool poncho was quickly adopted by the Spaniards in the countryside, mostly in the Andean and Pampa regions, and would later become one of the staple garments of the gaucho. The alpaca poncho serves as a warm piece of clothing but can also be used as a blanket or even as an accessory when folded and draped over the shoulder
